Death, and the Queen of France

I was at work today, editing  the Thousand and One Arabian Nights, and generally getting paid to pretend to read old, cultured works of literature. Suddenly, a falsetto voice came floating from the next room. “Isn’t death a wonderful thing?” mused our computer programmer, Richard. “Almost as wonderful as life…” What? He just kept on programming. Apparently, he was reading aloud from whatever eBook he was working with at the time.

Later on, Sam and I were talking about the emotional challenges of coping with the death of a loved one. As I packed up my things to go home, Richard’s voice interrupted us yet again to announce, “The Queen of France!” in  high-pitched, triumphant tones.

I’m thinking I like my job. ♦
